Description
Diethyl malonate is a dicarboxylic ester primarily used as a raw material in the synthesis of aromatic compounds. Its intrinsic odor is slightly fruity and ethereal, but it is mainly employed as a chemical precursor in the synthesis of aromatic molecules such as lactones, ketones, and other esters. As a technical material, it is an important intermediate in the manufacture of several fragrance molecules. Its reactivity in organic chemistry (notably in Knoevenagel synthesis and Doebner condensations) makes it a versatile synthetic tool for perfumer chemists. Its direct use in formulation remains marginal.
