Description
COUMARIN is an iconic molecule in modern perfumery, first isolated from tonka bean (Dipteryx odorata) in 1820. Its olfactory profile is sweet, gourmand, and slightly balsamic, with a note of cut hay, sweet vanilla, and almond that gives it a very seductive warmth. A cornerstone of masculine fougère accords (since Houbigant's Fougère Royale, 1882), it is also used in oriental-gourmand, powdery-floral, and sweet amber fragrances. Its remarkable fixative power and subtle diffusion make it a highly versatile base ingredient. It pairs beautifully with lavender, vetiver, and musks.
